ESL Presentation Rubric

In-class presentations are a great way to encourage a number of English communicative skills in a realistic task that provides students not only help with their English skills but prepares them in a broader way for future education and work situations. Grading these presentations can be tricky, as there are many elements such as key presentation phrases beyond simple grammar and structure, pronunciation and so on that make a good presentation. This ESL presentation rubric can help you provide valuable feedback to your students and has been created with English learners in mind. Skills included in this rubric include  stress and intonation, appropriate linking language, body language, fluency, as well as standard grammar structures. Rubric Category 4: Exceeds Expectations 3: Meets Expectations 2: Needs Improvement 1: Inadequate Score Understanding of Audience Demonstrates a keen understanding of the target audience, and uses appropriate vocabulary, language, and tone to address the audience. Anticipates probable questions and addresses these during the course of the presentation. Demonstrates a general understanding of audience and uses mostly appropriate vocabulary, language structures, and tone when addressing the audience. Demonstrates a limited understanding of audience, and generally uses simple vocabulary and language to address the audience. Not clear which audience is intended for this presentation. Body Language Excellent physical presence and use of body language to effectively communicate with the audience including eye contact, and gestures to underscore important points during the presentation. Overall satisfactory physical presence and use of body language at times to communicate with the audience, although a certain distance can be noted at times because the speaker is caught up in reading, rather than presenting information. Limited use of physical presence and body language to communicate to the audience including very little eye contact. Little to no use of body language and eye contact to communicate with the audience, with very little care given to physical presence. Pronunciation Pronunciation shows a clear understanding of stress and intonation with few basic errors in pronunciation at the level of individual words. Pronunciation contained some individual word pronunciation errors. Presenter made a strong attempt at using stress and intonation during the course of the presentation. Presenter made numerous individual word pronunciation errors with little attempt at the use of stress and intonation to underline meaning. Numerous pronunciation errors during the course of presentation with no attempt made at the use of stress and intonation. Content Uses clear and purposeful content with ample examples to support ideas presented during the course of the presentation. Uses content which is well structured and relevant, although further examples might improve the overall presentation. Uses content which is generally related to the theme of the presentation, though audience needs to make many of the connections for itself, as well as having to accept presentation on face value due to an overall lack of evidence. Uses content which is confusing and at times seems unrelated to overall presentation theme. Little or no evidence is provided during the course of the presentation. Visual Props Includes visual props such as slides, photos, etc. which are on target and helpful to the audience while not distracting. Includes visual props such as slides, photos, etc. which are on target, but may be slightly confusing of distracting at times. Includes few visual props such as slide, photos, etc. which at times are distracting or seem to have little relevance to the presentation. Uses no visual props such as slides, photos, etc. or props that are poorly linked to presentation. Fluency Presenter is in firm control of the presentation and communicates directly with the audience with little or no direct reading from prepared notes. Presenter is generally communicative with the audience, although he or she finds it necessary to often refer to written notes during the presentation. Presenter sometimes communicates directly with the audience, but is mostly caught up in reading and/or referring to written notes during the presentation. Presenter is entirely tied to notes for presentation with no real contact established with the audience. Grammar and Structure Grammar and sentence structure sound throughout the entire presentation with only a few minor mistakes. Grammar and sentence structure mostly correct, although there are a number of minor grammar mistakes, as well some mistakes in sentence structuring. Grammar and sentence structure lacking coherence with frequent mistakes in grammar, tense use and other factors. Grammar and sentence structure are weak throughout the entire presentation. Linking Language Varied and generous use of linking language used throughout the presentation. Linking language used in the presentation. However, more variation could help improve the overall flow of the presentation. Limited use of very basic linking language applied throughout the presentation. Interaction with Audience Presenter communicated effectively with audience soliciting questions and providing satisfactory responses. Presenter generally communicated with the audience, though he or she became distracted from time to time and was not always able to provide a coherent answer to questions. Presenter seemed to be slightly distant from the audience and was not able to adequately respond to questions. Presenter seemed to have no connection with the audience and made no attempt to solicit questions from the audience.

Karl Marx’s philosophies on society, politics and economics is collectively understood as Marxism. He was a materialist and an atheist who had a profound impact on the world of intellectual thought. Banning Books Essay Example For Students

Banning Books Essay Banning BooksOur freedom is under attack! Censorship is clearly an attack on our freedom. There are a number of books that are banned or challenged that are great books, such as The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. These books are classics. Banning these books robs students of great literature. Censorship of books in secondary schools should not be allowed. The list of books that have been banned completely in many schools across the nation is expansive, and so are the reasons that parents and schoolboards give for banning these books. Advocates of literary censorship say that its best for the students. Opponents say that it is detrimental to the educational system. The students have mixed emotions. Literary censorship at the secondary school level is indeed very widespread. One of the most controversial books is Huckleberry Finn, which is currently under fire by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the NAACP because it contains the word n igger 39 times in the first 35 pages. They feel that the liberal use of such a derogatory word is detrimental to the self-esteem of young African-American children. The NAACP says that they want the book removed from required-reading lists, but they are not out to censor it (Campbell, par. 4). Large groups such as the NAACP are not the only people pushing for Huckleberry Finns banning in Americas schools. Small groups of parents have protested the books status as required reading in their childrens schools because of its language. Huckleberry Finn isnt the only book targeted by parents. Another frequently challenged book is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book was handed out at an Irvine, California, middle school in 1992 with profane words such as damn and hell blocked out. Students wrote to Bradbury describing the situation and pointing out the irony that a book about the evils of censorship had to be censored before they could read it. The books were soon replaced with uncen sored ones (Campbell, par. 27). The Catcher in the Rye was challenged in several school districts nationwide because of the liberal use of slang and obscene words that author J.D. Sallinger used to make the book more realistic. Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird has been banned in several secondary schools for containing racist slurs. Some readers felt that the book portrayed Negroes as barbarians and criminals. The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare was banned in a secondary school in Midland, Michigan, because a small group of parents felt that the character Shylock projected a negative image of Jews. Another Shakespeare classic, Twelfth Night, was banned in Merrimak, NH schools in 1996 after a prohibition of alternative lifestyle instruction act was passed by the school board. Other Shakespearean works have been challenged in various schools in America because parents and administrators felt that some characters project a homosexual image (Banned, par.7). Every person who i s involved in debate over literary censorship believes that he or she is doing the right thing for the students. The advocates of literary censorship believe that exposing children to such material as Huckleberry Finn in high school will contaminate their minds with racist garbage at a time in their lives when they are searching for things to believe in. Opponents see the banning of Huckleberry Finn in many schools a form of censorship that will teach children that speaking their minds is not a good thing to do (Campbell, par. 8). However, the debate over literary censorship in schools is not a debate over whether or not literature should be censored at all. Most parents, teachers, and administrators would agree that censorship is necessary to maintain a good environment for learning. The debate is over whether or not to draw the line at Huckleberry Finn. If the book was good twenty years ago, then why all of a sudden is it not good for students to read anymore? People read the book before and they are doing just fine. If the book can stand the test of time, then it must have some value to it. Even people who consider themselves the most avid opponents of literary censorship in schools would agree that pornography should be kept out of schools. Therefore it is important that teachers expose their students to exceptional literature by requiring them to read it. There is a huge difference between removing books from the curriculum and removing them from the library. As long as the books are in the library, the students have access to them. It is better to read and learn about the books in class through class discussions. The teacher can help explain parts that are unclear and point out that profane and racial language is used for a purpose. When the students just read the book themselves, they may not fully understand the meaning of what the author is trying to portray. Ray Bradbury attacks book censorship in the afterward of Fahrenheit 451 by saying that there is more than one way to burn a book, and that the world is full of minority groups running around with lit matches in the form of censors and bans. He asks people to stop trying to censor his wo rk because it steals from the integrity of it (Bradbury 180). It is a mad world and it will get madder if we allow the minority of would-be censors to interfere with the beauty of literature. Authors have the right to say whatever they want in their books, so long as it isnt libelous. High schools censor and ban books because they feel that some material is inappropriate for high school kids to read. However, it seems that some parents and administrators wish to carry their ability to censor what their kids read too far. Harper Lee uses racial slurs in To Kill A Mockingbird to accurately portray the events that would have occurred in the time period in which the book takes place. Furthermore, these slurs are used to represent the time period and the culture of the people who used racist words on an everyday basis. These same rules apply to Mark Twains Huckleberry Finn. Schools The main argument that advocates of censorship of such books have is ridiculous. They tell their opponents that letting high schoolers read the material in question will dirty their mind at a time when they are trying to develop their own morals. But the action of not letting high schoolers read such material is itself detrimental totheir moral development. To be against something, it is first necessary to have knowledge of it. Censoring and banning books denies students this knowledge and stands against this necessary development. Books that are considered by many the greatest ever written are also the ones that appear most of ten on ban lists, because the authors of these books wrote down exactly what they felt. Marijuana may control the way people act, think, and even hurt their college academics. Marijuana is one of the most popular used drugs in America ranking about third after tobacco and alcohol. Marijuana is a substance that has become very much a part of American culture; many college students have either used it occasionally or regularly. With that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to find out about students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and their use of marijuana. In fact most students might not even know what they are smoking and what exactly makes them feel the way they do. Exactly what is marijuana? Marijuana is made of the dried leaves and flowers of the female cannabis sativa plant, and looks like oregano. There are many different marijuana preparations that are widely used to obtain effects. It can be either smoked or taken by mouth. Marijuana can be smoked in the form of a hand-rolled cigarette ("joint" or "reefer") it is also smoked in a va riety of pipes. Hashish (hash) is a dried-caked resin from the flowers and leaves of the plant. It is sold in chunks and cubes, and its color range from light brown to black. Hashish is often blended with tobacco and smoked. It is more potent than marijuana because it contains a higher concentration of THC. THC is the main ingredient in all cannabis preparations. The more THC cannabis contains, the stronger it is. The effects of marijuana are similar to alcohol intoxication. Spanish Civil War essays On the Nationalist side, there were four main factions; the Carlists, the Catholic Church, the Falange, and the Monarchists. The Carlists supported the claim of the descendants of Don Carlos to the throne of Spain. They wanted a return to a traditionalist ultra-Catholic monarchy. The movement's support came from the Requetes, the Pelayos and the Margaritas, whose recruits were mainly drawn from the families of Navarrese smallholders. The Catholic Church supported CEDA, a composite right-wing Catholic party founded in 1933 by Gil Robles. It was formed from the Accion Popular and Partido Agrario, and had a youth movement known as the JAP. Although successful in the 1933 elections, the Party virtually collapsed after the Popular Front victory in 1936. The membership of JAP then switched to the Falange. The Falange was a small fascist. It gained some popular support when it merged with the JONS in 1934 to form the Falange Espanola de las JONS. The Monarchist groups, which inclu ded Accion Espanola and Renovacion Espanola, supported the claim of the descendants of Queen Isabella II to the throne of Spain. The Monarchist movement, which had the support of conservative army officers, became the focus of opposition to the Republic after the abdication of King Alfonso XIII. On the Republican side were the Anarcho-Syndicalists, the Basques, the Catalans, the Communists, the Marxists, the Republicans, and the Socialists. The Anarchist movement in Spain was the strongest in Europe. Its main support came from the industrial workers of Barcelona, who formed the anarcho-syndicalist trades union in 1911. The Anarchist also founded a youth movement, the FIJL, to promote anarcho-syndicalist beliefs amongst the young. He first became Mr. Sobchak's head of external relations and then served as deputy mayor from March 1994. When Mr Sobchak lost power in 1996 it was another liberal, deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais, who recommended him for a job in the presidential administration. There he rose to be deputy chief-of-staff before being asked, in July 1998, to take charge of one of Russia's new security services, the Federal Security Bureau (FSB), replacing Nikolai Kovalyov. Subsequently, President Boris Yeltsin appointed him as head of the powerful Security Council. After Boris Yeltsin sacked Sergei Stepashin in August 1999, he became Russia's prime minister. On the last day of the 20th century, Boris Yeltsin resigned and appointed him as acting president. Presidential elections were held on March 26, 2000. Putin received 52.94 percent of all votes.
